Is It Better To Be Innovative Or Be A Follower?

Days ago I was chatting with a friend in Yahoo! Messenger, and the topic of making money online came up. He has a PR4 blog and is currently active in advertising networks such as PayPerPost, Blogsvertise and Blogitive. Though making considerably less for a PR4 blogger, he seems quite content with his daily routine of writing 2 opportunities a day, and sniff around for some extra paid-post tasks at Blogsvertise and Blogitive.

To my understanding, writing just 2 opportunities a day doesn’t bring in much. Due to the stiff competition for opportunities nowadays, Asian bloggers can only hope there are ridiculous opps for the taking. Such ridiculous opps usually require a high amount of words but offering an inferior sum compared to the other opps. For example, a 300 words opp for a mere 5 bucks. Would you pick up the opp if you see it?

I would. For 5 bucks in USD easily converts to over RM15 in Malaysia. That’s good enough to pay meals for a day or two. The situation now is that US bloggers seem to get the better opps because they have better Internet connection, not mentioning some of the opps are geographical targeted.

Back to the topic. I asked him if writing 2 posts a day is enough. He said yes, to a certain extent. He also said that nothing can be done, even if we really wanted to make more money. Well, I do agree that if you stick to your advertising networks, nothing can be done to maintain a steady monthly Internet income. But I have always believed in diversifying your income, in other words not to keep your income too reliant on paid-posting.

I also encouraged him to be innovative and to think of new ideas of making money online. He politely declined. He said he wants to be a follower. He wants to see what people are doing to earn money, brag about it in their blogs, and then try to get a piece of the pie by doing the exact same thing. Naturally I disapprove this attitude, for it doesn’t guarantee that new methods are being discovered everyday, but everyone’s got their own views. I’m just glad to have mine.

So, is it better to be innovative or be a follower? You decide.

Note: PayPerPost now allows three (3) posts per blog a day! Woohoo! Well, too bad for me.
