The End of Google PageRank (and Paid Posting!)

The rumour is that Google is planning to abolish the whole PageRank concept at the end of the year. While this is great for websites with low PageRank, blogs with PR5 and above will definitely feel the pinch. With so many blogging advertising networks measuring a blog using PageRank, it would be disastrous for people making a comfortably tidy sum online.

While I refuse to acknowledge the rumour, as it sounds absurd to me, bloggers around the blogosphere are also dismissing the rumour as… well, a rumour. I don’t believe Google would pull such a stunt in killing paid posting, though it has been one of their recent intentions. Paid links are an unfair advantage to other webmasters, but if search engines find their way to push those links off their database, nobody would want to offer money for posts anymore.

Other than PageRank, I guess it only leaves Alexa to do the job. However, if Alexa takes over as the main gauge for blogs, it would be disastrous for us too. Imagine advertisers only taking top 5,000 or 10,000 blogs. Most advertisers don’t know the pool of bloggers who want to advertise for them. Thinking most of the top 5,000 will spread the word, advertisers would rather much invest on a smaller and higher range of bloggers to do the job. Soon enough, lots of lots of bloggers will come up with many different ways to increase their Alexa ranking.

Maybe it’s best for blog advertising networks like PayPerPost to have their own script to detect number of visitors per day and judge blogs in that manner. The script should be able to detect redundant IP visits to avoid fraud. Heck, they could even buy Sitemeter if they want to.

Your thoughts on the rumour, please?
